To pay tribute to our shared legacy from the Bauhaus movement, and to harness its living potential to shape a transnational future, the German Design Museum Foundation will be traveling through the US in 2019, putting on a roadshow designed especially for school students and museums. The hands-on workshops will be offered in both urban design centers and rural areas of America, our partner country.
Discover Design – Discover Bauhaus! is an interactive program with a modular format aimed at children and young adults aged 6 to 18. The program made its debut at the Boston Hub Week from 10 to 14 October 2018, where it was a real hit. The exact itinerary for the 2019 tour will be drawn up and made public in the next few weeks (the key periods will be March to April and September to October). This exciting journey of discovery through the design world is sponsored and supported by the German Federal Foreign Office, the Goethe Institute, and the Federation of German Industries. We would like to invite American educational institutions that are interested in this program to visit our website for further information. Registrations are open now: www.deutschesdesignmuseum.de/foerdern/discover-design.html
The workshops are free of charge, and we provide all the necessary materials.
Be creative: Discover Design – Discover Bauhaus!
In keeping with the spirit of the Bauhaus movement which sought to unite different artistic and technical disciplines, the workshops will provide a space for school students, teachers and museum staff from different backgrounds to come together and interact with our design students, the up-and-coming professionals of the design world. In the workshops, participants will work as part of an interdisciplinary team. They will address some of the basic principles of modern design, and learn how to transfer essential Bauhaus principles to creative design work. Curiosity and experimentation take the place of traditional class teaching, and all of the knowledge imparted is aimed at stimulating imagination and creativity. After some introductory exercises, the participants will then create their own design based on the 10-minute chair model. They will also have the opportunity to come up with poster designs to communicate the key ideas behind their creations. “Our aim is to inspire excitement about our shared design inheritance – and to tackle questions about future issues within the framework of an intercultural dialog," explained Lutz Dietzold,Managing Director of the German Design Museum Foundation. Bauhaus, which remains a source of inspiration for creative artists worldwide, uniquely links Germany and America through common roots and lasting influence on developments in design and architecture.
Discover Design: Learn to take part in shaping your environment.
The educational and cultural initiative DISCOVER DESIGN has already reached 15,000 students and teachers in Germany since 2014. DISCOVER DESIGN is also active in other western European countries, e.g. in conjunction with international collaborative projects such as the Milan Triennale with its 476,068 visitors in 2016. For the Year of German-American Friendship 2019, the German Design Museum Foundation will also reach out to numerous children and adolescents and their teachers in the United States with its attractive educational program.
The workshops are designed to develop aesthetic awareness, and the hands-on activities will inspire participants with the joy of creation – enabling them to actively take part in forming their everyday lives and environment, even in today’s complex, digital world. The US roadshow, Discover Design – Discover Bauhaus! is aimed at young Americans in both cities and rural areas. They will learn in a playful way that the open development and production processes formed by the Bauhaus movement can still be used creatively in today’s world. The hands-on workshop concept for schools, museums and educational establishments is conceived as a model that can be transferred to different settings.
